Xylitol USP / Ph.Eur

Xylitol is a bulk sweetener can be used  for partial to full replacement of sugar (also called sucrose) in sugar-free, no-sugar-added or reduced- calorie versions of Food/pharmaceuticals/Nutraceutical. 

It provides both sweetness (similar to sugar) and bulking properties and helps mask some of the bitter note associated with high-intensity sweeteners. 

Advantages over sugar:

• Xylitol can replace sucrose in all applications on a weight-for-weight basis. ( because their molecular weight is similar) 
• Xylitol has very nice cooling sensation, it can be consider in as many as formulations!!! 
• It is freely soluble in water. Once dissolved, the viscosity of  and sugar solutions are same. Xylitol can be easily substituted in syrups. 
•  Xylitol in its pure, crystalline form is less hygroscopic than sugar. This helps provide increased shelf stability of products made with Maltitol vs. those made with sucrose.
• Xylitol has greater thermal and chemical stability than sugar. It does not react with amino acids when heated, which prevents the Maillard reaction from occurring, thus reducing unwanted browning. 
• There is very close similarity in taste, aftertaste and mouth feel of pure, crystalline Xylitol  and sugar. These similarities allow Xylitols use alone as a bulk sweetener in most sugar-free applications. 
• It has no metallic flavour, a liquorice aftertaste or acidic notes, which is usually found in some high-intensity sweeteners. 
• Depending on the overall formulation, products containing Xylitol can display a number of label claims, including “no sugar added,” “sugar free” and “reduced calorie.”
• Because oral bacteria don’t ferment pure Xylitol, it is not acidogenic or cariogenic. These properties make it safe for teeth and useful in chewing tablets, lozenges etc. 
• Xylitols low hygroscopicity makes it the polyol of choice for applications such as chewable tablets, where it contributes to high stability during storage.
• It can be used as a diluent (10-90%) 
• Since it is not hygroscopic it can be used with moisture sensitive formulations.
• It can be used in wet granulation techniques and the advantage is that granules get dried easily and faster.
• Our Xylitol  is free flowing (round particles) so can be used for direct – compression formulations as well.
• Xylitol can also be used as a secondary diluent in slow Release formulations. It can be used as an carrier in dry powder.
