Patent Expirations Hit Irish Pharma Exports to US

The end of patent protection has hit Irish pharmaceutical exports to the US in the first half of the year, new figures show.

Irish pharmaceutical exports to the US have slumped this year, new figures show.

The Irish Exporters Association (IEA) published its Half Year Export Industry Review 2012 today (August 1st), which reveals that pharmaceutical exports to the US fell by 30 per cent in the first half of the year.

John Whelan, chief executive of the IEA, blamed the situation on Ireland's over-dependency on the US market.

"Exports to Ireland's number one export market have taken a severe downturn as the full impact of the end of patent protection has hit pharmaceutical exports to the US in the first half of year," Mr Whelan confirmed.
