Indications.The oxidative stress indicates a group of reactionswhich take place in cells, in tissues and in biologicalmacromolecules when there is an excessive exposureto oxidizing agents, both of endogenous andexogenous type, for example natural and artificiallight sources. The correct balance is essential since many processesare extremely sensible to its modifications, whichcould lead to disfunction, cellular damage, necrosis orapoptosis. The enzymatic systems with the most higherantioxidant activity are represented, for example, bysuperoxide dismutase (SOD). Due to its structure and its anatomic position, the eyeis constantly exposed to light and it represents one ofthe organs which suffers the action of free radicals,directly and indirectly, on cornea, crystalline, vitreousand retina. The exposition to light radiations leads to an increaseof physiological ROS (free radicals) concentration,responsible of corneum conjunctival oxidativereactions.In the eye, oxidative processes target keratinocytes,fibroblasts and conjunctiva’s epithelial cells.
