Pharmapack 2021: Convergence of trends are pushing drug delivery devices towards connectivity, says Nemera
Electronic devices and connectivity are being progressively included in drug delivery devices, bringing positive outcomes to all stakeholders, according to drug device combinations specialist, Nemera Tuesday
Introducing the day’s online conference track, Digital Health, Connectivity and Patient Centricity at Pharmapack Europe 2021, Séverine Duband, Marketing Director at Nemera said there was currently a convergence of major trends towards digital health and connected devices.
She said the rise of biologics, especially to treat chronic diseases, had increased the need for advanced, complex delivery systems such as electronic devices with automatic injection.
“Another important, growing trend is self-administration and homecare, all the more fuelled since the COVID-19 epidemic with people trying to avoid having to spend time in the clinic or hospital care setting,” she told delegates. “This also raised the need for more interactive and automated devices that can rerun the administration process for the patient in a serious way.”
Ms Duband also highlighted the increasing focus on patients and the challenge of ensuring they can increase adherence to treatment.
“Making devices that are more user-friendly, seamless and using those latest innovations within the connected field really help to bring added value into the regimen treatments, adherence and monitoring,” she said.
The final major trend towards a new digital age was the rising adoption of connected health within the global population, who were already using smartphones to track their health and fitness, according to Ms Duband.
“That can go up to disease management tracking with new applications and even up to a certain extent, to closed loop systems; very advanced technologies which manage not only the treatment but also the diagnoses, and can adjust the dose needed by the patient,” she said. “So in a nutshell, all these trends fuel into drug delivery devices and have also set the ground for the growing share of which they are taking within the connected space.”
