Pharma packaging must prioritise sustainability – Pharmapack 2023 preview

CPHI Online discusses the importance of sustainability considerations at this year’s Pharmapack with Sustainability Partner Stevanato Group, in anticipation of Pharmapack Europe taking place in Paris, France from February 1–2, 2023.

Sustainability has been a trending topic throughout the pharmaceutical industry since before the pandemic. For the pharmaceutical packaging industry, sustainability presents unique challenges related not only to manufacturing processes, but also to consumer trends and usability. After all, a therapeutic’s packaging is its first impression to those it intends to treat.

Ahead of Pharmapack Europe, we catch up with Mauro Stocchi, Chief Business Officer at Stevanato Group – this year’s Pharmapack Sustainability Partner – to understand the challenges pharmaceutical packaging partners are facing when it comes to sustainability, but also what they may gain from prioritising sustainable practices.

Stevanato Group is the Sustainability Partner for this year’s Pharmapack Europe. What are some of the most pressing sustainability concerns for pharmaceutical packaging partners and how are they being addressed?

We are proud to partner with Pharmapack Europe on a matter as important as sustainability.

The pharmaceutical and life sciences industry is well positioned to create value for society and the environment, as its innovations contribute to sustainable development according to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. For instance, the COVID-19 pandemic emphasized the crucial relevance of the industry for society and people.

There are many sustainability challenges for companies that include environmental, social, and governance matters. In particular, we see climate change and natural capital conservation on the environmental side, human rights and a sustainable supply chain on the social side, and transparency of a corporate model on the governance area, among others.

Companies in the industry are significantly tackling such challenges, taking the opportunity to leverage opportunities while minimising risks. What unique challenges do sustainability concerns bring to the pharmaceutical packaging sector, and supply chain as a whole?

The pharmaceutical packaging industry faces greater challenges than other industries.

For many, aesthetic appeal and user experience are at the top of the list of priorities when it comes to packaging design. However, when it comes to pharmaceutical products, health, safety, and medicinal integrity remains the primary objective. Indeed, pharmaceutical and life sciences companies are heavily regulated.

We particularly see as sustainability challenges the reduction of GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions associated with packaging, the improvement of waste management, and the integration by design of sustainability practices while maintaining compliance and high-level regulatory requirements of the industry.

What can companies such as Stevanato Group gain from implementing sustainability into their business considerations and practices (biotechnological innovations, industry standards/trends etc.)?

Companies that take sustainable measures can significantly reduce future costs and risks, and simultaneously increase their value for the company itself, society, and the environment. By pursuing a sustainable strategy and solidifying their reputation as a sustainable company, these companies will gain the license to operate as well as trust from customers, governments, global institutions, and other key stakeholders while working towards long-term success in the industry.

How do events such as Pharmapack benefit the pharmaceutical packaging sector?

Pharmapack can be considered a key annual event where you can make the most out of industry innovations and networking. We can adamantly say that Pharmapack is where innovation meets collaboration since it’s the perfect place to showcase your innovations to a qualified audience. You have the opportunity to meet industry experts and discover major pharma trends and industry insights – altogether, this can only bring significant benefits to the pharmaceutical packaging sector. It’s the best opportunity to build the future of pharma together.

What are you most looking forward to at Pharmapack this year?

For Stevanato Group, Pharmapack is an important window that allows us to reconnect with our customers and prospects, as well as expanding our network. Pharmapack is traditionally the event where we present our latest developments as a technology-based and science-driven company. It gives us the opportunity to meet with other pharma professionals face-to-face, whilst discovering emerging trends in the industry.

Last year at Pharmapack, we announced our partnership with Owen Mumford for the innovative Aidaptus® auto-injector. This year will see the chance for us to not only share how these plans are progressing, but also to unveil a new product with the ultimate goal of improving patient lives. It’s definitely great to be at Pharmapack again. We are looking forward to this great event and the opportunities it will bring!

Registration for Pharmapack is open until January 31, 2023. Click here to secure your pass.
