Colorcon, Inc. Launches Corelease™ OPL, Direct to Hopper Blend for Osmotic Pump Tablets

Ready-formulated systems approach simplifies osmotic pump tablet development and manufacturing.
Harleysville, Pennsylvania, USA, 16 April 2024, Colorcon, a world leader in the development and supply of film coating systems, specialty excipients, and functional packaging for the healthcare industries, launches Corelease OPL™ Controlled Release Osmotic Push Layer for osmotic pump tablets. This launch marks another innovative step in the company's commitment to advancing controlled release technologies for the pharmaceutical industry.

Corelease OPL™ is a direct-to-hopper push layer blend designed to simplify the direct compression process for bilayer push-pull osmotic pump (PPOP) tablets. These unique dosage forms are designed to provide a consistent zero-order drug release, offering significant benefits to patients in terms of safety, effectiveness, and ease of use when compared to other controlled release technologies.

Corelease™ OPL is set to simplify PPOP development and production with a streamlined approach to formulation design, while enhancing manufacturing efficiency. This novel approach combined with Corelease CA™ Formulated Osmotic Coating System, a one-step semipermeable membrane enhances consistency and efficiency in osmotic tablet production.

Dr Ali Rajabi-Siahboomi, VP & Chief Innovation Officer explains: “PPOP tablets commonly use polyethylene oxide PEO in the formulation, leading to the need for complex processing and cleaning steps in the manufacturing process which can be both time-consuming and complex. Opting for a fully formulated PEObased push layer blend provides a more efficient solution for development and manufacturing. Using this novel blend, the number of processing steps, including milling, blending, and granulating, is notably decreased, simplifying the production process and reducing the cleaning efforts related to the polymer”.

Beth Tran, Global Business Manager explains: “This direct-to-hopper approach introduces a straightforward solution, streamlining supply chain management, quality control, and other processes to save time and simplify osmotic tablet production. The goal is to boost productivity, minimize time-to-market, and empower pharmaceutical manufacturers to attain heightened efficiency, all while maintaining consistency”.

This addition to the new range of controlled-release formulated systems reaffirms Colorcon's position as an industry leader, dedicated to providing comprehensive solutions that drive efficiency, reliability, and success in pharmaceutical product development.
